2016 FIRST ROUND REVIEW
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
1 RAMS 10 Jared Goff QB Cal Jr 6'4 215
The Rams made a splash by coming up 14 spots in a trade with the Titans to acquire this pick. LA gave up two 2nd round picks, a 3rd round pick, and a 1st & 3rd next year. The new residents of Hollywood have been average for years. They know you can't elevate without a QB. Time will tell if Goff is that guy. He has a big arm, but his accuracy struggles down the field. He also could stand to add some weight to his frame.

2 EAGLES 12 Carson Wentz QB North Dakota State Sr 6'5 233
Philly gave up a 3rd & 4th round pick this year, a 2017 1st, and a 2018 2nd to move up six spots to add the future QB. Wentz has tremendous size, good arm strength, and good mobility. It remains to be seen if the Eagles will move Sam Bradford. They also acquired Chase Daniel in free agency. If no other moves are made, there will be about $30 million in 2016 salary in the Eagles QB room.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
3 CHARGERS 2 Joey Bosa DE Ohio State Jr 6'5 285
I was really surprised by this pick. Not surprised because Bosa is a super talented player, I am just surprised because he doesn't necessarily fit in San Diego, schematically.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
4 COWBOYS 8 Ezekiel Elliott RB Ohio State Jr 6'0 225
Dallas has been rumored to be in love with Zeke for some time, and they ultimately made the decision to select him. Elliott is a three-down back, with breakaway speed, great hands, and good pass blocking ability. Is the 4th pick too high to draft a back? Probably so, but he wouldn't have been around much longer after this pick.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
5 JAGUARS 1 Jalen Ramsey DS Florida State Jr 6'1 204
The Jaguars hit a home run by waiting patiently and having the top prospect in the draft fall in their laps. Ramsey can be a lock down corner or he can be a center field safety. Either way, he immediately improves their defense.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
6 RAVENS 5 Ronnie Stanley OT Notre Dame Sr 6'5 318
Laremy Tunsil's leaked marijuana gas mask video probably prevented him from being drafted here. Stanley is a very good player, and talent wise he isn't far off from Tunsil.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
7 49ERS 9 Deforest Buckner DE Oregon Sr 6'6 286
Chip Kelly loves him some Oregon Ducks. Buckner is a physically gifted defensive lineman, who should make a nice combo with last year's top pick Arik Armstead. (Coincidentally, he is also an Oregon player)
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
8 TITANS 18 Jack Conklin OT Michigan State Jr 6'6 308
The Titans traded a 3rd round pick this year and a 2nd in 2017 to come up seven spots. I assumed they were coming up to get Tunsil, but instead they drafted Conklin. Conklin isn't the athletic player Tunsil is, but he is a nasty blocker. Only question is, can he play left tackle?
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
9 BEARS 31 Leonard Floyd OLB Georgia Jr 6'5 244
The Bears traded a 4th round pick to move up two spots. They wanted to get ahead of the Giants to select the highly athletic Leonard Floyd. Floyd is a pick that is full of potential. Potential that was never fully realized in Athens.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
10 GIANTS 54 Eli Apple CB Ohio State rSo 6'1 200
This was a big time reach at a position that was not really needed. Apple was my 6th best CB.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
11 BUCCS 4 Vernon Hargreaves, III CB Florida Jr 5'11 194
Tampa moved down two spots and got the player they wanted the whole time. I love VH3. He was my top ranked corner. Some knock his size, or say he is "only" a nickel. I don't buy any of that.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
12 SAINTS 28 Sheldon Rankins DT Louisville Sr 6'1 304
Rankins has been linked to the Saints for about two months. He absolutely dominated the Senior Bowl practices. Rankins will line up opposite of Cam Jordan to give the Saints a very good pair of book ends.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
13 DOLPHINS 3 Laremy Tunsil OT Mississippi Jr 6'5 305
Miami potentially gets a steal in Tunsil. If Tunsil can get control of the off-field stuff look out. I would look for Branden Albert to kick inside to guard, with Tunsil taking over on the left side for the next decade.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
14 RAIDERS 35 Karl Joseph DS West Virginia Sr 5'10 205
While I feel this was a reach here, Joseph fills a need after the retirement of Charles Woodson. KJ will lay the hammer down on you in a hurry. He had 3 picks in a half early in the season. He is coming off a knee injury however.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
15 BROWNS 29 Corey Coleman WR Baylor Jr 5'11 194
The Browns added a receiver with some of the best agility in the draft. Coleman is fast, but his agility in the open field is where his money is made. He ran a limited route tree at Baylor, but he was very good at the four routes he ran.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
16 LIONS 15 Taylor Decker OT Ohio State Sr 6'7 310
I had mocked Decker to the Lions for the last month or so. They needed help up front and he was the best tackle on the board.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
17 FALCONS 90 Keanu Neal DS Florida Jr 6'0 211
There are some in the draft community that loved Keanu Neal. I am not one of them. This is a humongous reach by Atlanta. It was easily the worst value pick in round one.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
18 COLTS 38 Ryan Kelly OC Alabama Sr 6'4 311
Kelly will anchor the Colts line for a decade. This was a no-brainer pick. The value is lower because of the position he plays, but the need was there.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
19 BILLS 21 Shaq Lawson DE Clemson Jr 6'3 270
Rex Ryan loves Clemson. I am not sure where he fits in the Bills defense. He also has some shoulder issues that may require him to miss some time.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
20 JETS 25 Darron Lee OLB Ohio State Jr 6'1 232
Lee is one of the fastest LB's in the entire draft. He upgrades the athleticism of the Jets defense overnight.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
21 TEXANS 45 Will Fuller WR Notre Dame Jr 6'0 186
Fuller has tremendous speed and horrible concentration. He has too many drops for my tastes, but he will get plenty of chances opposite of Deandre Hopkins. Houston traded a 2017 6th round pick to move up one spot.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
22 REDSKINS 22 Josh Doctson WR TCU Sr 6'2 202
Doctson is a red zone weapon. He wins most of the 50/50 balls thrown his way. He will be a tremendous asset.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
23 VIKINGS 20 Laquon Treadwell WR Mississippi Jr 6'2 229
Teddy Bridgewater will love Treadwell. Laquon has tremendous hands and is the best blocking receiver in the draft.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
24 BENGALS 14 William Jackson CB Houston Sr 6'0 189
With all of the receivers gone, the Bengals drafted best player available, like they always do. Jackson has the best ball skills of any corner in the draft. He likely will not contribute right away, but Dre Kirkpatrick is a free agent after this season, and Adam Jones is up there in age.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
25 STEELERS 78 Artie Burns CB Miami (FL) Jr 6'0 193
Pittsburgh likely wanted William Jackson, but after he went off the board, they reached for Artie Burns.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
26 BRONCOS 7 Paxton Lynch QB Memphis Jr 6'5 225
Denver traded a 3rd round pick to move up and draft their QB of the future. Lynch was my #1 rated QB. He has a huge arm and is very athletic.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
27 PACKERS 30 Kenny Clark DT UCLA Jr 6'3 315
Clark is a penetrating defensive tackle. He is an asset in their running and passing games. He didn't get a lot of run leading up to the draft because of all of the other talented defensive line players.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
28 49ERS 88 Joshua Garnett OG Stanford Sr 6'4 317
San Francisco traded a 4th and a 6th round pick to move up nine spots to draft a guy that would habe no doubt been on the board for them at pick 37. He may have been there at their 3rd round pick. This is a big time reach.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
29 CARDINALS 19 Robert Nkemdiche DT Mississippi Jr 6'3 294
Arizona took a chance on the uber talented but oft-troubled Robert Nkemdiche. The Cardinals locker room is a very good one to help him keep his life together and make this pick pay off big.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
30 PANTHERS 39 Vernon Butler DT Louisiana Tech Sr 6'3 325
Defensive tackle wasn't a need for Carolina, but Butler was likely BPA on their board.
Pick TEAM DFD Rank Name Pos School Class Hgt Wgt
31 SEAHAWKS 43 Germain Ifedi OT Texas A&M Jr 6'6 324
Seattle needed an offensive tackle and they hope Ifedi can be the guy. This marks the fourth consecutive year a Texas A&M offensive tackle has been selected in the first round. (Luke Joeckel, Jake Matthews, Cedric Obueghi)
