Combine Day Three (2/22/15)

DEFENSIVE LINE GROUP ONE:
Fastest 40-yard dash: Vic Beasley, Clemson 4.53
Slowest 40-yard dash: Tyeler Davidson, Fresno State 5.16
Fastest 10-yard split: Eli Harold, Virginia 1.56
Slowest 10-yard split: Tyeler Davidson, Fresno State 1.82
Top Broad Jump: Vic Beasley, Clemson 10’10”
Top Vertical: Vic Beasley, Clemson 41”
Top 3-Cone Drill: Vic Beasley, Clemson 6.91sec
Top Bench Press (225 lb.): Vic Beasley, Clemson 35 reps
Notes: Mario Edwards (Florida State) was very quick in the change of direction drill. Randy Gregory (Nebraska) and Eli Harold (Virginia) were very quick and explosive in the drills. Gregory came in a little smaller than normal, and that is something that requires monitoring. Vic Beasley (Clemson) was the most impressive player in this group in all categories. He managed to stay fast despite the weight he added. Anthony Chickillo (Miami-FL) was very quick in the bag drills. Trey Flowers (Arkansas), Zach Hodges (Harvard), Tavaris Barnes (Clemson), Vic Beasley, Eli Harold, Kyle Emanuel (North Dakota State), Dante Fowler, Jr. (Florida), Randy Gregory, Frank Clark (Michigan), Anthony Chickillo, and Markus Golden (Missouri) all worked out in linebacker drills.

DEFENSIVE LINE GROUP TWO:
Fastest 40-yard dash: Owa Odighizuwa, UCLA 4.62
Slowest 40-yard dash: Danny Shelton, Washington 5.64
Fastest 10-yard split: Owa Odighizuwa, UCLA 1.62
Slowest 10-yard split: Danny Shelton, Washington 1.88
Top Broad Jump: Davis Tull, Chattanooga 11’0”
Top Vertical: Davis Tull, Chattanooga 42.5”
Top 3-Cone Drill: (TIE) Preston Smith, Mississippi State and Zach Wagenmann, Montana 7.07sec
Top Bench Press (225 lb.): Deon Simon, Northwestern State 35 reps
Notes: Danny Shelton (Washington) ran a slow 40, but he looked very quick in the other drills. Preston Smith (Mississippi State) was also very impressive in drills. Leonard Williams (Southern Cal) was very quick and fluid. Gabe Wright (Auburn), despite being the last player in the change of direction drill, completely forgot how to do it. Nate Orchard (Utah), Ryan Russell (Purdue), Preston Smith, Za’Darius Smith (Kentucky), Lynden Trail (Norfolk State), Zach Wagenmann (Montana), and Owa Odighizuwa (UCLA) all participated in linebacker drills. Trail looked the most impressive.

LINEBACKER GROUP:
Fastest 40-yard dash: Kwon Alexander, LSU 4.55
Slowest 40-yard dash: Tony Washington, Oregon 4.99
Fastest 10-yard split: Edmond Robinson, Newberry 1.61
Slowest 10-yard split: Taiwan Jones, Michigan State 1.79
Top Broad Jump: Bud Dupree, Kentucky 11’6”
Top Vertical: Bud Dupree, Kentucky 42”
Top 3-Cone Drill: Alani Fua, BYU 6.38
Top Bench Press (225 lb.): Mike Hull, Penn State 31 reps
Notes: Kwon Alexander (LSU) looked very fluid in drills. I was also impressed by Bryce Hager (Baylor). After he blew up the measurement drills, Bud Dupree (Kentucky) didn’t participate in field drills.

Combine Day Two (2/21/15)

QUARTERBACKS GROUP ONE:
Fastest 40-yard dash: (TIE) Cody Fajardo, Nevada and Brett Hundley, UCLA 4.63
Slowest 40-yard dash: Anthony Boone, Duke 5.03
Top Vertical: Bryan Bennett, SE Louisiana 37”
Top Broad Jump: Bryan Bennett, SE Louisiana 10’5”
Notes: This group of QB’s is just bad. Almost all of them showed poor footwork in their drops. Shane Carden (East Carolina) was sailing everything over his wide outs heads. Brandon Bridge (South Alabama) has the size and arm, but his lack of fundamentals is disturbing. Bryan Bennett (SE Louisiana) was probably the best QB in this group, but that isn’t saying a whole lot.
QUARTERBACKS GROUP TWO:
Fastest 40-yard dash: Marcus Mariota, Oregon 4.52
Slowest 40-yard dash: Sean Mannion, Oregon State 5.14
Top Vertical: Nick Marshall, Auburn 37.5”
Top Broad Jump: Nick Marshall, Auburn 10’4”
Notes: Jameis Winston (Florida State) did a great job throwing all of the routes, especially the deep ball. He showed great footwork. Not to be outdone, Marcus Mariota (Oregon) was very solid in his drop backs, and looked very smooth throwing the entire route tree. Bryce Petty (Baylor) looked much better throwing in shorts at the Combine than he did throwing in pads at the Senior Bowl. It is a good thing Nick Marshall (Auburn) is also working out as a DB, because his footwork and accuracy as a QB was atrocious.
RUNNING BACK GROUP:
Fastest 40-yard dash: Jeremy Langford, Michigan State 4.41
Slowest 40-yard dash: Joey Iosefa, Hawaii (FB) 5.02
Top Vertical: Ameer Abdullah, Nebraska 42.5”
Top Broad Jump: Ameer Abdullah, Nebraska 10’10”
Top 3-Cone Drill: Ameer Abdullah, Nebraska 6.79sec
Top Bench Press (225 lb.): Joey Iosefa, Hawaii (FB) 30 reps
Notes: Duke Johnson (Miami-FL) has very quick feet. Dee Hart (Colorado State) and Kenny Hilliard (LSU) struggled in both the 40 and the on-field drills. David Johnson (Northern Iowa) continues to impress me with his hands and his quickness.
WIDE RECEIVERS GROUP ONE:
Fastest 40-yard dash:  Phillip Dorsett, Miami-FL 4.33
Slowest 40-yard dash:  Devin Funchess, Michigan 4.70
Top Vertical: Chris Conley, Georgia 45”
Top Broad Jump: Chris Conley, Georgia 11’7”
Top 3-Cone Drill: Justin Hardy, East Carolina 6.63sec
Top Bench Press (225 lb.): (TIE) Sammie Coates, Auburn and Geremy Davis, UConn 23 reps
Notes: Doriel Green-Beckham (Missouri) looked really good tracking the deep pass and in the gauntlet drill. Nelson Agholar (Southern Cal) and Mario Alford (West Virginia) also looked good in the gauntlet drill. Agholar dislocated his middle finger and couldn’t finish the rest of the drills. Justin Hardy (East Carolina) made a great leaping catch to bail out his college QB Carden.
WIDE RECEIVERS GROUP TWO:
Fastest 40-yard dash: J.J. Nelson, UAB 4.28
Slowest 40-yard dash: Ezell Ruffin, San Diego State 4.71
Top Vertical: Jaelen Strong, Arizona State 42”
Top Broad Jump: J.J. Nelson, UAB 10’7”
Top 3-Cone Drill: Tyler Lockett, Kansas State 6.89sec
Top Bench Press (225 lb.): Kevin White, West Virginia 23 reps
Notes: Kevin White (West Virginia) was very smooth in the gauntlet drill. J.J. Nelson (UAB) was very good in the gauntlet drill, and very fast in the 40. However, he is only 156 pounds, and at that weight, I can’t see him holding up in the NFL. Devante Parker (Louisville) and Tyler Lockett (Kansas State) were very good running the route tree. Vince Mayle (Washington State), Ty Montgomery (Stanford), Keith Mumphrey (Michigan State) and Darren Waller (Georgia Tech) dropped multiple passes.

Combine Day One (2/20/15)

OFFENSIVE LINE GROUP ONE:
Fastest 40-yard dash: Jake Fisher, Oregon 5.01
Slowest 40-yard dash: Brett Boyko, UNLV 5.60
Fastest 10-yard split: (Tie) Jake Fisher, Oregon and Jamil Douglas, Arizona State 1.75
Slowest 10-yard split: Brett Boyko, UNLV 1.96
Top Broad Jump: Cameron Erving, Florida State 9’4”
Top Bench Press (225 lb.): Ereck Flowers, Miami-FL 37 reps
Notes: Jake Fisher and Cameron Erving (Florida State) looked really athletic in drills. They both looked like you want an offensive lineman to look. Even though his measurable scream offensive guard, I think Brett Boyko can play offensive tackle in the NFL. Worst case scenario for him, is he plays the swing tackle position. He could feasibly be a utility lineman, capable of playing 4 of the 5 line spots. I really don’t get why people think La’el Collins (LSU) can’t play left tackle. He has plenty of athletic ability to hold it down.
OFFENSIVE LINE GROUP TWO:
Fastest 40-yard dash: Ali Marpet, Hobart College 4.98
Slowest 40-yard dash: Josue Matias, Florida State 5.52
Fastest 10-yard split: Ali Marpet, Hobart College 1.74
Slowest 10-yard split: Darrian Miller, Kentucky 1.97
Top Broad Jump: (TIE) Three players 9’5”
Top Bench Press (225 lb.): Sean Hickey, Syracuse 35 reps
Notes: Arie Kouandjio (Alabama) did not run the 40, lacks athleticism, and is very tight in the hips. Andrus Peat (Stanford) has some of thickest legs on a prospect I have ever seen. Terry Poole (San Diego State) has quick feet and changes direction easily. He is a guy I have to take a deeper look into. Ali Marpet (Hobart College) put on a show in drills. He is making a huge jump in competition from D-III to the NFL. He had a great Senior Bowl and he continued that today. Austin Shepard (Alabama) looked out of shape, not very athletic, and is probably not draftable.
TIGHT END GROUP:
Fastest 40-yard dash: MyCole Pruitt, Southern Illinois 4.58
Slowest 40-yard dash: Nick Boyle, Delaware 5.04
Top Broad Jump: Jesse James, Penn State 10’1”
Top Bench Press (225 lb.): Gerald Christian, Louisville 28 reps
Notes: A lot of the tight ends look like they have never been in a three-point stance before. MyCole Pruitt (Southern Illinois), Wes Saxton (South Alabama), and Maxx Williams (Minnesota) all did a nice job tracking deep passes. Nick O’Leary (Florida State) was pretty slow in the 40, but did a great job in the Gauntlet drill. He also was the only player who didn’t wear gloves. Maxx Williams cemented himself as the best of a subpar group of TE’s.

The first stop on the Path to the Draft (TM NFL Network) was the 2016 Reese's Senior Bowl. DFD had week long coverage from the event. You can check that out below:

DFD SENIOR BOWL COVERAGE

I had the pleasure of interviewing 8 players who participated in the Senior Bowl activities. You can listen to those HERE.

The 2016 NFL Scouting Combine is set to get underway on February 26th in Indianapolis. The NFL has made some policy changes in regards to the selection of players for this year's event. If a background check on a player shows an assault, domestic violence, or weapons related arrest then that player will not be allowed to participate. If this was in place a year ago, Seahawks 2nd round pick Frank Clark would not have been allowed to participate. Number one overall pick Jameis Winston would not have been affected, since he was never formally charged with anything. You can view all of the DFD Combine coverage here.

I will be releasing my first MOCK DRAFT of the year this weekend.

The DFD POSITION RANKINGS and TOP 100 are currently up to date for pre-Senior Bowl, but they will both be updated this weekend as well. The changes will reflect my thoughts on players after more tape study and observations from Senior Bowl week.

I am also working on setting up my initial board for the 2017 NFL Draft, because you can never get too far ahead. I will start posting that information around Mid-May.

The NFL Free Agency and Trade period begins at 3 pm (CST) on March 9th. As always, this will have a huge effect on what teams do in the draft. Teams also have to designate franchise players by 3 pm on March 1st.

Buckle up, we are only 78 DAYS away from the 2016 NFL Draft!!!
