Combine
Day Four (2/29/16)
DEFENSIVE BACK GROUP ONE:
Fastest 40-yard dash: Jonathan
Jones, Auburn 4.33
Slowest 40-yard dash: Lamarcus
Brutus, Florida State 4.76
Top Broad Jump: Vernon
Hargreaves, Florida 10’10”
Top Vertical: Deandre
Elliott, Colorado State 41”
Top 3-Cone Drill: Sean
Davis, Maryland 6.64
Top Bench Press (225 lb.): Sean Davis, Maryland 21 reps
Notes: Mackensie
Alexander (Clemson) talked a really big game in his media interviews at the
combine, but didn’t work out during any of the drills. Kenneth Crawley
(Colorado) tested really well. He was a little high in his backpedal. Vernon Hargreaves
was tremendous in everything he did today, and cemented a top 10 grade from me.
William Jackson (Houston) ran under 4.4 and performed all of the field drills
excellently. T.J. Green (Clemson) is a guy I will need to go back and watch
tape on. He is starting to pick up more positive vibes than his much more
heralded teammate Jayron Kearse. Deandre Elliot tested well and looked smooth
in the field drills. He needs to catch the ball better. Devante Harris (Texas
A&M) is another guy that I am not sure why he was here. He was just sloppy
all around. Juston Burris (NC State) looked good in the field drills and ran an
unofficial 4.47 40. Artie Burns (Miami-FL) is another guy I have to watch more
tape of. He struggled in the gauntlet drill but was very good everywhere else.
DEFENSIVE BACK GROUP TWO:
Fastest 40-yard dash: Brandon
Williams, Texas A&M 4.37
Slowest 40-yard dash: A.J.
Stamps, Kentucky 4.79
Top Broad Jump: Jalen
Ramsey, Florida State 11’3”
Top Vertical: Jalen
Ramsey, Florida State 41.5”
Top 3-Cone Drill: Justin
Simmons, Boston College 6.58
Top Bench Press (225 lb.): Miles Killebrew, Southern Utah 22 reps
Notes: Jalen Ramsey
did nothing today to change my mind that he is the best player in the draft.
Rashard Robinson (LSU) ran slower than expected and looks like he hasn’t eaten
in weeks. Ryan Smith (North Carolina Central) ran a 4.7 40 and looked very
smooth in his backpedals. He is a guy I would love to see more of before the
draft.
Combine
Day Three (2/28/16)
DEFENSIVE
LINE GROUP ONE:
Fastest
40-yard dash: Kamalei Correa, Boise State 4.69
Slowest
40-yard dash: (TIE) Austin Johnson, Penn State and Darius Latham,
Indiana 5.32
Fastest
10-yard split: Kamalei Correa, Boise State 1.63
Slowest
10-yard split: Sterling Bailey, Georgia 1.92
Top
Broad Jump: Joey Bosa, Ohio State 10’0”
Top
Vertical: Jason Fanaika, Utah 35.5”
Top
3-Cone Drill: James Cowser, Southern Utah 6.80
Top
Bench Press (225 lb.):
(TIE) Matt Ionaddis, Temple and Ronald Blair,
Appalachian State 32 reps
Notes: Shilique
Calhoun (Michigan State) looked very smooth in drills. He looked completely
comfortable doing the linebacker drills. James Cowser was quick in the bag
drills. Matt Judon (Grand Valley State) tested better than I expected. Ronald
Blair (Appalachian State) struggled in the conversion drills. Sheldon Day
(Notre Dame) took part in the conversion drills and really didn’t do that bad.
Joey Bosa looked a little stiff in the field drills, but he excelled in the 3
cone and shuttles.
DEFENSIVE LINE GROUP TWO:
Fastest
40-yard dash: Charles Tapper,
Oklahoma 4.59
Slowest
40-yard dash: Chris Mayes, Georgia 5.34
Fastest
10-yard split: Emmanuel Ogbah, Oklahoma State 1.59
Slowest
10-yard split: Devaunte Sigler, Jacksonville State 1.83
Top
Broad Jump: Alex McAlister, Florida 10’8”
Top
Vertical: Dadi Nicholas, Virginia Tech 41”
Top
3-Cone Drill: Alex McCalister, Florida 7.01
Top
Bench Press (225 lb.): Chris Mayes, Georgia 33 reps
Notes: Jarran
Reed (Alabama) looked light on his feet. Charles Tapper had a bad Senior Bowl
week but he more than made up for it today. He ran the fastest 40 for all
defensive linemen and he looked smooth in all of the field drills. Alex
McCalister tested well but he has a very skinny frame. Shawn Oakman (Baylor)
did not test well and looked stiff in drills. Shaq Lawson (Clemson), Yannick
Ngakoue (Maryland), Noah Spence (Eastern Kentucky), Ron Thompson (Syracuse),
and Emmanuel Ogbah all looked good in the conversion drills. D.J. Pettway
(Alabama) was very solid today.
LINEBACKER GROUP:
Fastest
40-yard dash: Darron Lee, Ohio State 4.47
Slowest
40-yard dash: Gionni Paul, 5.05
Fastest
10-yard split: Darron Lee, Ohio State 1.55
Slowest
10-yard split: (TIE) Gionni Paul, Utah and Kris Frost, Auburn 1.74
Top
Broad Jump: Darron Lee, Ohio State 11’1”
Top
Vertical: Travis Feeney, Washington 40”
Top
3-Cone Drill: Nick Vigil, Utah State 6.73
Top
Bench Press (225 lb.): B.J. Goodson, Clemson 30 reps
Notes: Eric
Striker (Oklahoma) is a player I really want to like. I struggle to see where
he plays in the NFL and him running a 4.8 40 is not helping. Gionni Paul was
slow and stiff and I really don’t know why he was here. Joe Schobert
(Wisconsin) looked very good in the conversion drills. Su’a Cravens (Southern
Cal) was very smooth in the field drills as one might expect from a converted
safety. He chose not to run the 40.
Combine
Day Two (2/27/16)
QUARTERBACKS GROUP ONE:
Fastest 40-yard dash: Jeff Driskel, Louisiana Tech 4.56
Slowest 40-yard dash: Brandon Doughty, Western Kentucky 5.22
Top Vertical: Connor Cook, Michigan State 33”
Top Broad Jump: Jeff Driskel, Louisiana Tech 10’2”
Notes: Trevone
Boykin (TCU) was behind on a lot of his throws. Some teams view him as a wide
receiver, but his 4.78 40 is not going to help his case there. Jared Goff (Cal)
had very nice ball placement. He showed good footwork and overall mechanics.
Brandon Doughty was very good on his deep throws. I was surprised by Jeff
Driskel’s 40 time. He had a good Senior Bowl week, and performed well here.
QUARTERBACKS GROUP TWO:
Fastest 40-yard dash: Carson Wentz, North Dakota State 4.77
Slowest 40-yard dash: Cody Kessler, Southern Cal 4.89
Top Vertical: (TIE) Cardale Jones, Ohio State and
Paxton Lynch, Memphis 36”
Top Broad Jump: (TIE) Paxton Lynch, Memphis and Carson Wentz, North Dakota
State 9’10”
Notes: We didn’t really learn much with this
group that we didn’t already know. Carson Wentz continued his rise. He looked
smooth in his drop backs and his mechanics were spot on. Paxton Lynch looked
comfortable with drop backs. This is a checked box for him, since he hasn’t
taken many snaps from under center. Dak Prescott (Mississippi State) looked
well in the passing drills. He had an up and down week at the Senior Bowl, but
was solid today.
WIDE
RECEIVERS GROUP ONE:
Fastest
40-yard dash: Will Fuller, Notre Dame 4.32
Slowest
40-yard dash: Demarcus Ayers, Houston 4.72
Top
Vertical: Josh Doctson, TCU 41”
Top
Broad Jump: Josh Doctson, TCU 10’11”
Top
3-Cone Drill: Devon Cajuste, Stanford 6.49
Top
Bench Press (225 lb.): Aaron Burbridge, Michigan State 20 reps
Notes: Pharoh
Cooper (South Carolina) didn’t run the 40 because of a quad strain. He was
excellent in the gauntlet drill. Tyler Boyd (Pittsburgh) showed natural hands
in the gauntlet drill. Kenny Lawler (Cal) looked good running routes. Will
Fuller, who dropped a lot of passes this season, caught the ball well today.
WIDE
RECEIVERS GROUP TWO:
Fastest
40-yard dash: Ricardo Lewis, Auburn 4.43
Slowest
40-yard dash: De’Runnya Wilson, Mississippi State 4.85
Top
Vertical: Sterling Shepard, Oklahoma 41”
Top
Broad Jump: Chris Moore, Cincinnati 10’10”
Top
3-Cone Drill: Braxton Miller, Ohio State 6.65
Top
Bench Press (225 lb.): Sterling Shepard, Oklahoma 20 reps
Notes: Laquan
Treadwell (Mississippi) opted to not run his 40 at the combine. He was a little
sloppy in the gauntlet drill. It was also a little odd because he decided to
wear a ball cap while running the drills. Demarcus Robinson (Florida) has more
red flags than most players really needed to excel in the physical drills. His
4.59 40 was less than ideal. His 40 was not as bad as De’Runnya Wilson though.
History has not been kind to receivers running that slow. Duke Williams
(Auburn) is another red flag guy who needed something to take attention away
from that. He ran a 4.72 40.
TIGHT
END GROUP:
Fastest
40-yard dash: Jerell Adams, South Carolina 4.64
Slowest
40-yard dash: David Morgan, UTSA 5.02
Top
Broad Jump: Beau Sandland, Montana State 10’4”
Top
Bench Press (225 lb.): David Morgan, UTSA 29 reps
Notes: Jerell Adams
had impressive times in the 40, but he struggled tracking the deep pass. I
wonder why Nick Vannett (Ohio State) and Hunter Henry (Arkansas) didn’t run the
40. Henry didn’t perform any of the physical drills. David Morgan was slow in
the 40, but was very strong on the bench. He was also very smooth in the
gauntlet drill. Bryce Williams (East Carolina) continues to be unimpressive. He
ran a slow 40 (4.94). He and most of the other tight ends looked like they have
never blocked before.

Combine Day One (2/26/16)
OFFENSIVE LINE GROUP ONE:
OFFENSIVE LINE GROUP ONE:
Fastest
40-yard dash: Caleb
Benenoch, UCLA 4.98
Slowest
40-yard dash: Vadal Alexander, LSU 5.57
Fastest
10-yard split: Caleb Benenoch, UCLA 1.68
Slowest
10-yard split: Vadal Alexander, LSU 1.92
Top
Broad Jump: Joe Haeg, North Dakota State 9’3”
Top
Bench Press (225 lb.): (TIE) Spencer Drango, Baylor and Josh Garnett,
Stanford 30 reps
Notes: Vadal
Alexander was sloppy in a few of the drills and was the slowest in the sprints.
Power is his game however. Caleb Benedoch was quick in the sprints, but didn’t
do anything noteworthy otherwise. Joe Dahl (Washington State) was very smooth
in the field drills. Spencer Drango (Baylor) was slow in his kick slide. If you
combine that with his short arms, it pretty much cements to me that he will be
a guard at the next level. Willie Beavers looked smooth in his kick slide. I
had originally moved Beavers to guard, but have now moved him back to tackle.
Le’Raven Clark (Texas Tech) didn’t participate in field drills.
OFFENSIVE
LINE GROUP TWO:
Fastest
40-yard dash: Jason Spriggs, Indiana 4.94
Slowest
40-yard dash: Landon Turner, North Carolina 5.58
Fastest
10-yard split: Joe Thuney, NC State 1.70
Slowest
10-yard split: Denver Kirkland, Arkansas 1.96
Top
Broad Jump: Jason Spriggs, Indiana 9’7”
Top
Bench Press (225 lb.): Christian Westerman, Arizona State 34 reps
Notes: Laremy
Tunsil (Mississippi) came as advertised. He didn’t run the 40, but he looked so
smooth in all of the field drills. He has great bend and hips. Jason Spriggs
continued his elevation on my board. He was very smooth in all of the drills. I
can say the same for Ronnie Stanley. Dominique Robertson (West Georgia) has a
lot of tools to offer. He transferred from Texas Tech. He was a little slow in
his kick slide. Cody Whitehair (Kansas State) was very good in the pull drills.
I am slightly concerned with him only benching 16 reps though. Denver Kirkland
looked sloppy in the field drills and the sprints. I have to go back to the
tape on him. I thought more of him before this.
RUNNING
BACK GROUP:
Fastest
40-yard dash: Keith Marshall, Georgia 4.31
Slowest
40-yard dash: Andy Janovich, Nebraska 4.81
Top
Vertical: Daniel Lasco, Cal 41.5”
Top
Broad Jump: Daniel Lasco, Cal 11’3”
Top
3-Cone Drill: Wendell Smallwood, West Virginia 6.83
Top
Bench Press (225 lb.): (TIE) Andy Janovich, Nebraska and Dan Vitale,
Northwestern 30 reps
Notes: Derrick
Henry (Alabama) put on a show in the athletic drills. His broad jump and
vertical jump were in the top three in the position group. Ezekiel Elliot (Ohio
State) checked all of the physical boxes he needed to. He did drop a few passes,
however. I have been beating the drum for Tyler Ervin (San Jose State) for a
while. He excelled today in the field drills after running a 4.41 40. Kenneth
Dixon (Louisiana Tech) solidified himself as a Top 100 player. Daniel Lasco
stood out today. He was tops in most of the explosion drills and he caught the
football very well. Keith Marshall put everyone on blast with a 4.31 40, but he
was only so-so catching the football. Brandon Wilds (South Carolina) was very
natural catching the football. His 40 time of 4.54 was better than I expected.
Kelvin Taylor (Florida) was one of, if not the worst back catching the
football.
