WEEK 4: WEEK IN REVIEW

WEEK FOUR
WEEK IN REVIEW

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20TH
ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF @ ALABAMA STATE 6:30PM ESPNU

ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF:
TERRON ARMSTEAD (#70) SR OT 6-4 314
NOTES: Armstead is very raw. He is very strong at the point of attack, but plays high, and has sloppy footwork. He is a fringe draftable player at this point.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22ND

VIRGINIA @ TCU 11AM ESPN

VIRGINIA:
ODAY ABOUSHI (#72) SR OT 6-6 310
NOTES: Aboushi is very strong at the point. He struggles with his footwork, and at reaching the second level. He wasn’t really challenged by a pass rusher in this game.

MORGAN MOSES (#78) JR OT 6-6 335
NOTES: Moses needs some technique work. His footwork is choppy, and a good speed rusher can get him in trouble. He probably shouldn’t enter the draft this year.

TCU:
STANSLEY MOPANGA (#90) JR DE 6-2 265
STATS: 4 TACKLES
NOTES: Mopanga was very active during the game. Much more so than only 4 tackles would indicate.

MARYLAND @ WEST VIRGINIA 11AM FX

MARYLAND:
JOE VELLANO (#72) SR DT 6-2 285
STATS: 6 TACKLES, 2 TFL
NOTES: Vellano and Francis were giving Geno Smith fits all game. They were both applying constant pressure.

AJ FRANCIS (#96) SR DT 6-4 295
STATS: 4 TACKLES, 1 SACK

WEST VIRGINIA:
GENO SMITH (#12) SR QB 6-3 215
STATS: 32/43 338 YARDS, 3 TD
NOTES: Smith has a very strong arm and a very quick release.  He is accurate on his throws. Smith is moving up the ranks of senior QB’s and is playing his way into 1st round consideration.

TAVON AUSTIN (#1) SR WR 5-9 176
STATS: 13 REC 179 YARDS 3 TD
NOTES: Let the Percy Harvin comparisons begin. Austin is an explosive athlete with the ball in his hands. Hard to say where he is as a route runner, but he has great speed and makes plays.

MISSOURI @ SOUTH CAROLINA 2:30PM CBS

MISSOURI:
SHELDON RICHARDSON (#34) SR DT 6-3 290
STATS: 7 TACKLES, 1 FF, ½ SACK
NOTES: Richardson has a non-stop motor and can line up all over the defensive line. He and 6th year senior linebacker Will Ebner were the only bright spots on the Mizzou defense.

SOUTH CAROLINA:
TJ JOHNSON (#55) SR OC 6-4 316
NOTES: Johnson can handle his own in the run game. His shotgun snaps have improved greatly over the last year. I would consider him a priority free agent at this point.

KANSAS STATE @ OKLAHOMA 6:50PM FOX

KANSAS STATE:
ARTHUR BROWN (#4) SR ILB 6-1 228
STATS: 8 TACKLES
NOTES: Great instincts, but his size worries me if he hopes to transition to the mike position in the NFL. He may be a weak side LB at the next level.

NIGEL MALONE (#24) SR CB 5-10 178
STATS: 6 TACKLES

OKLAHOMA:
LANDRY JONES (#12) SR QB 6-4 230
STATS: 28/43 298 YARDS, 1 TD, I INT
NOTES: UGH! Landry Jones is falling like a rock. His arm strength and accuracy are not what I was expecting. I, in no way can project him near the first round at this point.

KENNY STILLS (#4) JR WR 6-0 190
STATS: 6 REC 60 YARDS

CLEMSON @ FLORIDA STATE 7PM ABC

CLEMSON:
MALLICAH GOODMAN (#97) SR DE 6-4 278
STATS: NO STATS ACCUMULATED

FLORIDA STATE:
EJ MANUEL (#3) SR QB 6-4 245
STATS: 27/35 380 YARDS 2 TD; 12 ATT 102 YARDS
NOTES: Manuel has good arm strength and great mobility. I would rank him as the #3 senior QB right now. My thing main problem with Manuel is his lack of consistency, play to play, week to week.

CHRIS THOMPSON (#4) 5-8 187
STATS: 15 ATT 103 YARDS 2 TD; 8 REC 79 YARDS
NOTES: Explosive, Explosive, and even more explosive. Outside of Oregon’s De’Anthony Thomas, no player in college football may have more explosiveness. Thompson would be higher on more lists, but you have to take his medical history into account. He missed most of 2011 with A BROKEN BACK. Dude is lucky to still be walking properly, much less making the plays he is.

ARIZONA @ OREGON 9:30PM ESPN

ARIZONA:
MATT SCOTT (#10) SR QB 6-3 198
STATS: 22/44 210 YARDS 3 INT

DAN BUCKNER (#4) SR WR 6-3 220
STATS: 3 REC 42 YARDS

OREGON:
DION JORDAN (#96) SR DE 6-6 246
STATS: 4 TACKLES, 1 FF

KIKO ALONSO (#47) SR ILB 6-4 242
STATS: 9 TACKLES, 1 INT

Week 3: Week in Review

WEEK IN REVIEW
WEEK THREE

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15TH
CAL @ OHIO STATE 11AM ABC

CAL:
KEENAN ALLEN (#21) JR WR 6-3 205
Stats: 9 rec 80 yards
Notes: Allen is a huge target, with great speed. He also has value in the return game. He has great run after catch ability, and a wide catching radius.

ISI SOFELE (#20) SR RB 5-8 190
Stats: 21 att 86 yards
Notes: Sofele shows excellent speed around the edge, and has good balance. His size will limit what he can do between the tackles. As of right now, I do not have sufficient video to determine what he can do in the pass game (block/catch).

OHIO STATE:
JONATHAN HANKINS (#52) JR DT 6-3 335
Stats: 10 tackles 1 sack
Notes: Hankins dominated the Cal interior line. He is a physical specimen capable of taking over games. Right now he is easily in the top 15 range.

BRADLEY ROBY (#1) R-SO CB 5-11 185
Stats: 9 tck 2 tfl 1 sack 2 pbu
Notes: Excellent speed and a sure tackler. Showed great pass rush ability. He dropped an easy pick six opportunity. He looks good in zone and man to man.

WAKE FOREST @ FLORIDA STATE 11AM ESPN

WAKE FOREST:
TANNER PRICE (#10) JR QB 6-2 205
Stats: 8/22 82 yards
Notes: Price had no chance to do anything. His offensive line gave him no opportunity to look downfield, or even stand upright to see downfield. His evaluation is incomplete.

MICHAEL CAMPANARO (#3) JR WR 5-10 190
Stats: 2 rec 8 yards
Notes: Campanaro didn’t get too many opportunities, due to what I previously said about Price. His evaluation is incomplete.

FLORIDA STATE:
BJOERN WERNER (#95) JR DE 6-4 273
Stats: 4 tackles 2.5 tfl 1.5 sacks
Notes: Werner is a tremendous athlete, and his football ability is outstanding for a guy who has only played the game for 5 years. His upside is through the roof. A definite round one pick at this stage.

TANK CARRADINE (#91) SR DE 6-5 267
Stats: 3 tackles 2.5 sacks
Notes: How good was Brandon Jenkins? Carradine is a tremendous pass rusher and is only getting a starting opportunity because Jenkins got hurt. I hope he continues to flourish throughout the year. He could elevate himself as high as the late first round.

NORTH CAROLINA @ LOUISVILLE 2:30PM ESPN2

LOUISVILLE:
TEDDY BRIDGEWATER (#5) SO QB 6-3 210
Stats: 23/28 279 yards 3 td
Notes: If Teddy was eligible for the 2013 draft, I would be tempted to put him in the conversation at the top. He can make all the throws, has good accuracy, and nice athletic ability. I am anxious to see him further develop over the next two seasons.

MARIO BENEVIDES (#55) SR OC 6-4 302
Notes: He snaps the ball well in 3 phases (under center, pistol, and shotgun). He shows ok quickness on his pull blocks. He handled himself well in one-on-one blocks. He shows good strength at the point of attack.

NORTH CAROLINA:
SYLVESTER WILLIAMS (#92) SR DT 6-3 320
Stats: 2 tackles 1 tfl

KEVIN REDDICK (#48) SR ILB 6-2 240
Stats: 4 tackles 2 tfl 1 sack

TEXAS A&M @ SMU 2:30PM FSN

TEXAS A&M:
LUKE JOECKEL (#76) JR OT 6-6 310
JAKE MATHEWS (#75) JR OT 6-5 305

SMU:
MARGUS HUNT (#92) SR DE 6-7 288
Stats: 3 tackles 1 sack 1 blocked kick
Notes: Hunt was much more active in this game, than in the Baylor game. You can see the potential that everyone loves.

SOUTHERN CAL @ STANFORD 6:30PM FOX

SOUTHERN CAL:
TJ MCDONALD (#7) SR FS 6-2 205
Stats: 9 tackles

JAWANZA STARLING (#29) SR SS 6-1 195
Stats: 1 tackle 1 int

STANFORD:
ZACH ERTZ (#86) JR TE 6-6 250
Stats: 3 rec 74 yards 1 td

LEVINE TOILOLO (#11) JR TE 6-7 263
Stats: 3 rec 47 yards

Week Two Week in Review

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH
PITTSBURGH @ CINCINNATI 7PM ESPN
PITTSBURGH:
RAY GRAHAM (#1) SR RB 5-9 195
Stats: 19 att 103 yards; 4 rec 51 yards
Notes: Graham shows good burst and good hands. He isn’t 100% back from his knee injury a year ago, but he is getting close.
 MIKE SHANAHAN (#87) SR WR 6-4 225
Stats: 5 rec 59 yards
Notes: Shanahan doesn’t possess enough top speed to be a top wide receiver at the next level. He is however well coached (son of Redskins HC Mike Shanahan), and I think he could be an H-Back type in the NFL.
DEVIN STREET (#15) JR WR 6-3 190
Stats: 5 rec 54 yards
HUBIE GRAHAM (#83) SR TE 6-3 230
Stats: 1 rec 8 yards
Notes: Got injured early made little to no impact in game.
CINCINNATI:
DREW FREY (#26) SR SS 6-3 200
Stats: 5 tackles
Notes: Frey was good in man coverage, as well as zone. He tackled well, but wasn’t the best sifting through garbage. He could be a nice mid round prospect, if he continues to improve.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 7TH

UTAH @ UTAH STATE 7PM ESPN

UTAH STATE:

KERWYNN WILLIAMS (#25) SR RB 5-9 185
Stats: 17 att 95 yards 1 TD
Notes: Williams showed excellent speed on the edge, but struggled running inside. He also has some value in the return game.
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 8TH
AUBURN @ MISSISSIPPI STATE 11AM ESPN
AUBURN:
EMORY BLAKE (#80) SR WR 6-1 197
Stats: 2 rec 31 yards
Notes: Until Auburn’s QB play improves, it is going to be hard to get an accurate evaluation on Blake.
ONTERIO MCCALEBB (#23) SR RB 5-10 175
Stats: 8 att 5 yards; 1 rec 7 yards; 3 KR 138 yards 1 TD (100 yard return)
Notes: McCalebb is a change of pace back at the next level, nothing more. He has excellent speed, and will make a roster because of his special teams ability.
MISSISSIPPI STATE:
JONATHAN BANKS (#13) SR CB 6-1 185
Stats: 6 tackle 2 INT
Notes: Banks is one of the best cover corners, not only in the SEC, but in the entire nation. His 2 interceptions on Saturday, he didn’t really have to work hard for, but credit him for being in the right place. He should be a first rounder in April.
COREY BROOMFIELD (#25) SR CB 5-10 180
Stats: 7 tackle 2 tfl
Notes: Broomfield is the forgotten man with Banks also in the secondary, but he has tremendous skills as well. He has tremendous tackling ability, and nice cover skills. He could be a 2nd day pick.
FLORIDA @ TEXAS A&M 2:30 PM ESPN
FLORIDA:
SHARIFF FLOYD (#73) JR DT 6-3 298
Stats: 5 tackle 1 tfl
Notes: Floyd lined up all over the D-Line for the Gators. He uses his hands well and holds his ground at the point of attack. He also has bull rush capabilities, using his shoulder well to force his man back into the play.
MATT ELAM (#22) JR SS 5-10 206
Stats: 4 tackle 2 tfl
TEXAS A&M:
LUKE JOECKEL (#76) JR OT 6-6 310
Notes: Joeckel for 3 quarters had the most dominant OL performance I have watched so far, but as the game wore on he seemed to tire. In the run game he excels opening holes for his backs, especially with the cut block. He was mostly dominant in the pass game, allowing a sack to FLA OLB/DE Lerentee McCray, and a pressure to OLB Neiron Ball. This performance didn’t sway my belief that he will be a top pick in 2013 if he comes out early.
JAKE MATHEWS (#75) JR OT 6-5 305
Notes: Mathews has the NFL bloodlines, and he has the NFL skill set to go with it. He had a dominant performance, in both facets of the game. He handled his man on about 95% of the snaps, and never gave up a sack or a negative yardage play. He also could be a top-20 level pick should he choose to come out early.
CHRISTINE MICHAEL (#33) SR RB 5-11 215
Stats: 13att 33 yards 1 TD; 3 rec 15 yards
MICHIGAN STATE @ CENTRAL MICHIGAN 2:30PM ESPNU
MICHIGAN STATE:
WILLIAM GHOLSTON (#2) JR DE 6-6 278
Stats: 7 tackle 2 tfl 1 sack
Notes: Gholston lived in the Chippewas backfield. The Spartans moved all over the D-line to take advantage of mismatches. The rep on Gholston is he takes plays off, but I didn’t see it on Saturday.
CENTRAL MICHIGAN:
ERIC FISHER (#79) SR OT 6-7 295
Notes: Fisher shows an excellent backpedal, he uses his hands well, and dominates at the point of attack. He switches off well in the run game, and shows ok mobility pulling. I really want to see him in an All-star game setting, especially if that game is in Mobile.
WASHINGTON @ LSU 6PM ESPN
WASHINGTON:
KEITH PRICE (#17) JR QB 6-1 195
Stats: 17/36 157 yards 1 INT
Notes: Price looked like a scared puppy in Death Valley Saturday night. Price was running for his life, and could never really set his feet. The times he could make throws he was fine. I like to use games like these as measuring sticks, and his OL was not ready for the challenge. I will evaluate again when they play Southern Cal on 10/13.
AUSTIN SEFARIEN-JENKINS (#88) SO TE 6-6 258
Stats: 6 rec 51 yards
Notes: Sefarien-Jenkins was one of the few bright spots for U-Dub. He shows a great catching radius, ability to stretch the middle of the field, and nice hands. He is going to be a star in Seattle and a potential first rounder in 2014.
LSU:
ERIC REID (#1) SR FS 6-2 208
Stats: 2 tackle, 1 PBU
GEORGIA @ MISSOURI 6:45PM ESPN2
GEORGIA:
BRANDEN SMITH (#1) SR CB 5-11 176
Stats: 1 tackles 2 PBU
JARVIS JONES (#28) JR OLB 6-2 242
Stats: 9 tackles, 2sacks, 1 FF, 1 INT
Notes: Jarvis Jones is an animal. He was nearly unblockable the entire game. James Franklin will see him in his sleep for weeks. Jones has tremendous speed on the edge, is a sure tackler, and is excellent in coverage. He will excel in both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes at the next level.
MISSOURI:
ELVIS FISHER (#72) SR OT 6-5 295
Notes: Was carted off the field in the first half with what appeared to be a bad knee injury. Fisher has had medical issues in the past, as he is a 6th year senior. Without his presence, Missouri’s pass blocking fell to pieces.
TJ MOE (#28) SR WR 5-11 195
Stats: 6 rec 45 yards
Notes: Moe is a nice route runner, capable of finding holes in zone coverage. I don’t really know how fast he is yet, and that will play a part in where I think he can be selected. Right now, I would project him in the third day range.
ILLINOIS @ ARIZONA STATE 9:30PM ESPN
ILLINOIS:
MICHAEL BUCHANAN (#99) SR DE 6-5 240
Stats: 2 tackle 1 PBU
Notes: Buchanan and Spence’s abilities were both neutralized by the Sun Devils up tempo offense. I will reevaluate them both during Big 10 play.
AKEEM SPENCE (#94) JR DT 6-1 305
Stats: 2 tackles, 1 FF
ARIZONA STATE:
ANDREW SAMPSON (#72) SR OG 6-3 304
Notes: Did a good job in 1-on-1 block and tandem blocking against Akeem Spence. He is not very agile when he gets out in space on a pull. He doesn’t switch off blocks very quickly either. At this point in my evaluation, I would consider Sampson a fringe draftable prospect.
CHRIS COYLE (#87) JR TE
Stats: 10 rec, 131 yards, 2 TD
Notes: Coyle wasn’t even on our radar before this game, but wow did I ever come away impressed. He showed excellent ability to get open. He was very sure handed, and showed nice run after the catch ability. He probably needs to put on a little weight over the next two years, but I see no reason why he can’t be one of the top 5 TE’s selected in 2014.
