Week One Week in Review

WEEK ONE
THURSDAY AUGUST 30
WASHINGTON STATE @ BYU
DVR Failure…We will watch these teams play again later this season.
FRIDAY AUGUST 31
NC STATE VS. TENNESSEE (ATLANTA)
NC STATE:
DAVID AMERSON (#1) CB, JR, 6-2 193
Stats: 9 tackles
Notes: Amerson did not look like a preseason All-American on Friday. He was beaten deep twice for TD’s, although it looked like he was supposed to have safety help on the latter. Amerson is a more talented player than what was on display and I have no doubt he will recover.
CJ WILSON (#20) CB, SR, 5-11 180
Did not Play
BRANDAN BISHOP (#30) FS, SR, 6-2 210
Stats: 9 tackles
EARL WOLFF (#27) SS, SR, 6-0 201
Stats: 12 tackles, 2 TFL
Notes: Wolff was all over the field making tackles, showing great range.
MIKE GLENNON (#8) QB, SR, 6-4  225
Stats: 27/46 288 yards 1 TD, 4 INT
Notes: Glennon showed tremendous arm strength all game. He has the measurables scouts drool over, but his decision making was lackluster at best. We will watch a few more games later this year to see if he improves.
TENNESSEE:
TYLER BRAY (#8) QB, SR, 6-5 210
Stats: 27/41 333 yards 2 TD
Notes: Bray frustrates scouts weekly. One throw he makes is other worldly; the next throw is bouncing 10 feet in front of his target. He has tremendous size, can make all the NFL throws, but you would like to see him be more consistent.
JUSTIN HUNTER (#11) WR, JR, 6-4 205
Stats: 9 receptions 73 yards
Notes: Hunter looks like he has recovered from his ACL surgery. He looked explosive in his routes. I expect him to put up huge numbers this year, and be a potential 1st round pick in the 2013 Draft.
MYCHAL RIVERA (#81) TE, SR, 6-3 254
Stats: 1 reception 13 yards
Notes: Rivera didn’t see many targets. We will reevaluate him later this season.
DALLAS THOMAS (#71) OT, SR, 6-5 305
Notes: Thomas handled his own during the game. He continues to improve, possibly getting into the late 1st round conversation.
BOISE STATE @ MICHIGAN STATE
BOISE STATE:
DJ HARPER (#7) RB, SR, 5-9 205
Stats: 15 att 8 yards; 2 rec 7 yards
Notes: Harper is a 6th year senior. I didn’t see any explosion at all from Harper, and consider him a non-prospect at this point in my evaluation.
MATT MILLER (#2) WR, SO, 6-3 215
Stats: 2 rec 54 yards
Notes: Miller is the go-to-guy for the new QB Southwick. He has the ability to get deep, with good speed. He should continue to develop over the next 2-3 years into a potential day 1 or 2 pick.
MITCH BURROUGHS (#20) WR, SR, 5-9 188
Stats: 2 rec 24 yards
MICHIGAN STATE:
DENICOS ALLEN (#28) SS, JR, 5-11 225
Stats: 3 tackles, 1 FR
MITCHELL WHITE (#32) CB, SR, 5-11 200
Stats: 1 tackle
MAX BURROUGH (#40) ILB, JR, 6-3 250
Stats: 7 tackles, 1 TFL
Notes: Burrough jumped out to me more than any other player in this game. He seemed to be in on every tackle. I would like to evaluate him in the passing game more, but as a pure tackler, he is one of the best I have seen in this draft cycle.
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 1
MIAMI (OH) @ OHIO STATE
MIAMI (OH):
ZACH DYSERT (#4) QB, SR, 6-3 214
Stats: 31/53 303 yards 1 TD, 2 INT
Notes: Dysert’s teammates did him no favors. I counted 12 dropped passes. If you give him half the drops, he would have completed 70% of his passes. Dysert has a good delivery, he moves the pocket well, and shows good arm strength. He has a great feel for the pass rush, shows good poise, and shows ok touch. He has been a starter for 3 years. I hope we get to see him in an All-Star game environment.
STEVE MARCK (#87) TE, SR, 6-3 240
Stats: 1 rec 3 yards
ELON @ NORTH CAROLINA
ELON:
AARON MELLETTE (#3) WR, SR, 6-3 215
Stats: 2 rec 9 yards; 1 att -3 yards
Notes: Mellette struggled getting off the line, and when he did he didn’t get far. He was targeted 6 times. I think he is better than what he showed, and the all-star circuit will be his chance at redemption.
SOUTHERN MISS @ NEBRASKA
SOUTHERN MISS:
JAIME COLLINS (#8) OLB/DE, SR, 6-3 247
Stats: 13 tackles, 2 ½ TFL, 1 sack
Notes: Collins diagnoses plays quickly, but he doesn’t anticipate them as well as I would like. His pursuit is great, because he possesses great speed. He finishes plays well, has good range, and explodes the gaps. He covers well in man and in zone. The biggest negative, I found in his game, was that he struggles getting off blocks.
NEBRASKA:
JEREMIAH SIRLES (#71) OT, JR, 6-6 320
Notes: Sirles played RT and was rotating into the game. He seemed to only play about 50% of the offensive snaps. He has good initial burst, with decent (not great) mobility. Sirles uses his hands well, which helps him in the passing game. He gets a little high in the run game. He excels in pass protection, showing a good back pedal, and solid technique.
ALABAMA VS. MICHIGAN (ARLINGTON, TX)
ALABAMA:
ADRIAN HUBBARD (#42) OLB, SO, 6-6 237
Stats: 1 tackle
Notes: Not much to go on in this game, as he didn’t get a lot of pressure from his OLB spot.
NICO JOHNSON (#35) ILB, SR, 6-2 246
Stats: 5 tackles
CJ MOSLEY (#32) OLB, JR, 6-2 235
Stats: 7 tackles, 1 INT (1 TD)
Notes: Mosley looked solid in his first action after his injury in the BCSNC game. He doesn’t look like he has lost any speed, which has been the best part of his game since high school.
DEE MILLINER (#28) CB, JR, 6-1196
Stats: 5 tackles, 1 Int, 4 PBU
Notes: Milliner has improved a lot over the last two years. He was extremely physical (a little too physical at times, he probably should have been flagged on his INT), and looked excellent in man to man coverage.
EDDIE LACY (#42) RB, JR, 5-10 220
Stats: 9 att 35 yards 1 TD; 1 rec 10 yards
Notes: Lacy has waited 2 years to be the man at Alabama, and after the explosion of true freshman TJ Yeldon (and to a lesser extent Jalston Fowler), Lacy may be waiting a little while longer. He is still a power back, with great agility, but I don’t think he is a can’t miss prospect.
MICHIGAN:
FITZGERALD TOUISSANT (#28) RB, JR, 5-10 195
Notes: was suspended week one
JAKE RYAN (#90) OLB, R-SO, 6-3 230
Stats: 5 tackles
Notes: Ryan has good bend around the edge, he completely embarrassed Fluker on the 3rd play of the game. I can’t wait to see more from him.
TAYLOR LEWAN (#77) OT, JR, 6-7 326
Notes: Lewan struggled against the Tide. He had at least 3 penalties, and was consistently beaten. I am sure he will improve, over the course of the season.
ARKANSAS STATE @ OREGON
ARKANSAS STATE:
RYAN APLIN (#16) QB, SR, 6-1 205
Stats: 29/44 304 yards 3 TD 1 INT; 12 att 37 yards, 1 TD
Notes: Aplin showed me he can be a good developmental QB at the next level. I think he needs to clean up his mechanics, but the talent is there. He has a good arm, but not great. He shows good touch, and can move the pocket when necessary. He has good pocket presence, but when the pressure did get to him, he got a little shaky. I would love to see him under center more, but that is not likely to happen in a Gus Malzahn offense.
JOSH JARBOE (#3) WR, SR, 6-2 215
Stats: 13 rec 66 yards 1 TD; 4 att 13 yards
Notes: Jarboe has some shiftiness, but his concentration isn’t always there. I could see him being a late round pick, but no higher than that.
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 2
SMU @ BAYLOR
SMU:
MARGUS HUNT (#92) DE, SR, 6-7 288
Stats: 2 tackles
Notes: Not many players have been hyped as much as Hunt in the off season. He looked a little lazy to me at times, and other times he looked like he didn’t have a clue. I never saw him pressure the QB once. He will be 26 during his rookie year, and I don’t know if he will develop football acumen in time to make a difference. An NFL team will take a chance based on his tremendous physical attributes, and mark my words he will blow up the combine; I just don’t know if he has what it takes to make it. I hope I am wrong, and I will evaluate more, but as of right now, I couldn’t put higher than a 3rd round grade on him.
BAYLOR:
LACHE SEASTRUNK (#25) RB, R-SO, 5-10 205
Stats: 3 att 39 yards
Notes: If Seastrunck continues showing the burst he showed in limited action against SMU, he won’t be that far down on the depth chart for long. He has tremendous speed and agility, and showed me enough flash to make me believe the hype he had coming out of high school 3 years ago.
